“ A Night in Vienna” Masked Ball
Friday 24 October 2014

 Posted 15th July 2014

The WM has booked the Draycote Hotel for the Ladies Night on the above date and he has negotiated Bed and Breakfast for those attending at £15 per head per night (based on two people sharing). The normal rate is £85-£95 per night, so we have a fantastic discount, and it’s not even worth considering driving.

There are only 50 rooms at the hotel and I it would be very helpful if you could givethe Secretary an early indication if you will be attending the function and if you require Bed and Breakfast for yourself and your guests.

The function room can comfortably accommodate 100 people, and included in the cost of £37.50 will be a drinks reception, wine at the table, 5 course dinner and all entertainment.

Hotel bookings will have to be a first come first served basis so book early to avoid disappointment.

Graham's 50 year certificate

Posted 11th July 2013

Graham Anderson was presented with his 50 year cetificate by W.Bro.Nigel Bister P.S.G.D Asst.P.G.M at the Regular Lodge Meeting on Wednesday 3rd April 2013.
Graham was initiated into Athol Lodge in March 1963.  He is definitely third and possibly fourth generation Lewis of Scottish Masons.  His father came to Severn Street for his initiation ceremony as a Master mason of Forfar Killwining Lodge No 90 in the Scottish constitution.
Born on 14th August 1933 in Witton, Birmingham in the shadow of Villa Park a team which he still supports today
Graham went to a local primary and junior school before gaining a place at King Edwards Grammar school Aston.
He finished school at the age of 16 with a School Certificate and a Higher School Certificate (O & A Levels to most of us) and went to work for Birmingham City Council as a clerk in the office as the prospect of National Service loomed over him, the year being 1949.
As expected in 1951 he was called up and joined the Duke of Wellington Regiment. After three months of basic training he was selected for the Royal Army Education Corp and two months later was posted to Malaya where there was a declared state of emergency with communist terrorists ambushing trains and local industry. He was still only 18 years old and this experience proved to be a real eye opener to the big outside world.
Thankfully he returned relatively unscathed eighteen months later having achieved the rank of Sergeant, participated in the funeral parade for King George VI in Feb 1952, the Coronation parade for our present Queen in Singapore during 1953 and had become fluent in Malay.
In February 1954 he joined the Birmingham Police Force, now West Midlands Police, as a beat bobby based at Kenyon Street. He showed his courage soon after when over-powering a thug who attacked him with a knife and received a commendation from a High Court Judge and the police Watch Committee.
He was a keen sportsman in his twenties and played Rugby for the Police
During his police career he served in CID, Traffic, on the Staff of Police Training College in Dishforth Yorkshire and various divisions of West Midlands Police, Rising to the rank of Superintendent before retiring in 1984.
Not wanting to rest on his laurels he then studied History at the now UCE and attained a 1st class honours degree
When asked of his memorable experiences during his career he recalled keeping order during the industrial disputes at the Longbridge plate. Also being one of the first police officers on the scene at the Tavern in the Town after the horrific pub bombings in November 1974. By coincidence the licensee was Dick Lawn who was a member of Athol Lodge.
He married Lillian in August 1957 and they are still blissfully happy today, some 56 years later, they have two sons Mike and Chris.  Chris lives in Australia with his wife Anna & their two grandchildren and Graham & Lillian try to spend six months each year, over the UK winter, in Sydney with them.
It is fair to say that Graham has had his share of ill health but is a fighter but he never complains and sadly some of these recent conditions have prevented him from attending lodge as often as he would like.
